FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
BPH Surgery FAQ’s
What is BPH surgery?
BPH surgery removes or reduces excess prostate tissue to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. It is typically recommended when medication is ineffective or complications arise, such as urinary retention, infections, or bladder stones.
How do I know if I need BPH surgery?
Surgery is considered when symptoms become severe and affect daily life, medical treatments are not providing relief, or complications develop. A urologist will assess factors such as prostate size, urinary symptoms, and overall health before recommending surgery.
What are the different types of BPH surgery?
There are several surgical options depending on the severity of the condition. Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a common procedure where prostate tissue is removed via the urethra. Laser procedures like Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) use energy to remove tissue while minimizing bleeding. Minimally invasive options, such as UroLift and Rezum, involve lifting or shrinking prostate tissue without cutting.
What is the recovery time after BPH surgery?
Recovery time varies by procedure. TURP and laser procedures typically require a hospital stay of one to two days, with full recovery taking up to six weeks. Minimally invasive procedures like UroLift and Rezum have a shorter recovery period, allowing patients to resume normal activities within a few days. A urinary catheter may be needed for a short time after surgery to aid recovery.
Are there risks or complications?
Like any surgery, BPH procedures carry some risks. Common complications include bleeding, infection, and temporary urinary incontinence. Some patients may experience urethral strictures or retrograde ejaculation, where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting through the urethra. While most men regain normal urinary function, long-term monitoring is necessary to ensure optimal outcomes.
Will surgery affect my sexual function?
Sexual function may be affected depending on the procedure. Erectile function is generally preserved, but retrograde ejaculation is common after TURP and laser surgeries. Minimally invasive procedures such as UroLift have a lower risk of this side effect, making them preferable for sexually active patients. A urologist can help determine the best treatment option based on individual concerns.
How long do the effects of BPH surgery last?
Most men experience long-term relief from urinary symptoms after BPH surgery. While symptom recurrence is possible over time, particularly with minimally invasive treatments, the majority of patients do not require additional procedures for many years. Regular follow-ups help monitor prostate health and ensure lasting results.
