An annual gynaecological check-up is recommended for every woman of reproductive age, even with no symptoms — it covers cervical screening, breast examination and general reproductive health. You should also book sooner if you experience irregular or unusually heavy periods, pelvic or abdominal pain, unusual bleeding or discharge, persistent UTI symptoms, painful intercourse, or are planning a pregnancy or struggling to conceive. Visits are also worthwhile to discuss contraception, HPV vaccination, perimenopause or menopause symptoms, or following any abnormal smear result. Younger patients should usually have their first appointment between ages 13–15, even just to establish care.
